Do Banks and Microfinance Institutions Compete? Microevidence from Madagascar

This paper examines whether the loan strategy of a microfinance institution (MFI) is shaped by entry bank. Specifically, we investigate distance between borrower an MFI and closest bank influences conditions provided MFI. We use original panel data set 32,374 loans granted to 14,834 borrowers one largest MFIs in Madagascar 2008 2014. find that closer located given borrower, larger obtained less collateral required. also effect stronger for clients could be more easily caught banks (i.e., large firms without previous relationship with MFI).
